April Nulgit is one of the youngest and most promising Warmun emerging artists. She forms the fourth generation of women-artists in her family – her mother; the renowned Charlene Carrington, her grandmother; Sade Carrington, and her great-grandmother; Betty Carrington, also one of the founders of Warmun Art Centre. Through her paternal heritage, she is connected to the Ngarinyin tribe from Derby. She comes from a big family of five brothers and one sister; she is also the eldest sibling. She completed her high school education at St Mary’s College in Broome.
April did her first ever painting at the age of 10, and unsurprisingly her talent in artistic practice was a natural one thanks to her genes. April often visits Texas Downs country with her family, and is told many Ngarrangkarni ( dream time ) stories associated with these places. These become the subjects of her paintings, and she likes to go out fishing and camping on Country during the weekends.
April was selected for the Revealed exhibition in Perth in 2018; for which she has been pushing her practice in painting – exploring original themes and image-making. Though a very strong artist, April also sets her sights towards becoming a vet someday, and has a natural affinity with animals, particularly the many camp dogs that follow her to work at the Warmun Art Centre.
