Soda Spring – Turner Story by Cecil Mosquito
In this work, emerging artist Cecil Mosquito captures the powerful landscape of his grandfather’s Country—Turner, on Flora Valley Station—mapping its significant features and the journey taken to reach them.
At the heart of the painting is Soda Spring, a sacred, continuously flowing spring that feeds smaller waterways across the land. Painted in bright yellow ochre and white, the main spring radiates out across the canvas. Surrounding it, rich red and pink pigments represent the limestone formations and rocky terrain—pink for the stone, red ochre for the limestone circles.
As Cecil describes, the journey begins in the bottom right corner of the painting:
“To get to Turner, you have to travel through this limestone area, then cross over to Soda Spring, and keep going until the hills start to rise—that’s how we knew we were getting close.”
Painted from a bird’s-eye perspective, the work reflects deep cultural knowledge—place, memory, and movement held in every mark. Although he began painting only in late 2024, Cecil’s connection to this Country runs far deeper. Through this work, he honours his grandfather David Turner and begins his own path as a cultural custodian and storyteller in paint.
