Living Currents of Connection: The Flow of Ord River and Limestone Country by Cecil Mosquito
Living Currents of Connection celebrates Jarlaloo Country and the Ord River as the lifeblood of Gija Country; a source of strength, identity, and spiritual connection.
Flowing through sacred landscapes, the Ord River links powerful places, from the stone ridges of Jarlaloo to the ancient domes of Purnululu.
This river carries more than water; it moves stories, songlines, and memory through Country.
Using traditional Gija ochres and flowing forms, I’ve painted the rhythm of the river and the movement of time. Each layer reflects the changing seasons, the deep channels, and the sacred places that shape our understanding of the land. Curved lines follow the river’s path, while earthy tones echo the limestone ridges, rocky outcrops, and hidden valleys that hold ancestral presence.
Jarlaloo Country carries the footprints of those who came before; old people who passed down knowledge and connection. This painting is a way of walking with them, of listening to the land, and of continuing that journey into the future.
Through this work, I honour my ancestors, my Country, and the deep relationships that live in the water, the stone, and the stories.
The spirit of the Ord River flows through us strong, enduring, and alive.
