Gija Women Skin Groups- Circles of life, Bloodlines and Country by Serena Pinday
Gija Women Skin Group – Serena Pinday
Ancestral Knowledge Through Generations
This powerful artwork by Serena Pinday honours the strength, resilience, and sacred knowledge of Gija women, carried through generations and held within skin names, stories, and Country.
From the moment of birth, within the mother’s womb on Gija Country, women are taught about law, culture, bush medicine, bush tucker, and the Dreamtime—as well as the painful truths of massacres and survival. These teachings are not just words; they are lived, painted, sung, and walked through Country.
Serena traces her ancestral line through her Great Grandmother, Nyuwurru, her Grandmother, Nangari, her Mother, Nangala, and herself—Nyajarri. Now, her own daughter carries the skin name of Nyuwurru, continuing the sacred cycle.
“It goes back in an endless circle,” Serena says. This painting is both a tribute and a vessel—carrying memory, identity, and law through the bloodlines of Gija women, bound together by skin names that connect past, present, and future.
