Memories in the Stone” – Cave Stories told by my (late) Grandmother by Cecil Mosquito
This painting tells a story that lives deep in my memory—a journey I first took as a young boy, guided by my grandmother. She took me to this cave, a sacred place nestled in the heart of the Bungle Bungles, near the Jalaloo area and Blue Hole, close to the limestone formations.
As we walked through that ancient landscape, she told me stories of her own childhood—of how she travelled through this Country with her mother and father, moving across the land, camping along the way, and painting in the caves. Those caves held not just their artwork, but their spirit, their laughter, and their way of life.
This painting is a tribute to that journey—a way to honour my grandmother and her parents, and the strong line of culture and memory they passed down to me. The stories are still there, in the shapes of the rocks, in the colours of the earth, and in the echo of the caves where they once painted.
This is their story—and now, it is mine too.
