I’ve recreated Gully Betty’s painting. Black and White inspired by my Grandmother Sadie Carrington which is Betty Carrington’s eldest daughter. The background is inspired by my big sister April Nulgit by using red and yellow, making strokes across the board while the red and yellow ochres are still wet to make the colours blend. I’ve experimented on this board by letting the board stand upright to let the middle blending part run down into the yellow. Betty Carrington to me and my big sister April Nulgit is our Great Great Grandmother. 3 generations. The dots are made by the end of my paintbrush.
Below is the story of this painting by Betty.
This is Ngarrgooroon Country. Now I am painting my brothers stories. I did these ones for the future, so the young ones can see the paintings from me and my brother. So they can take over, when I’m gone.
Betty painted this powerful homage to her brother, Hector Jandany. This significant new work continues the memory of this great Warmun elder, artist and elopuent ‘two-way’ teacher, who sadly passed away of old age in 2006.
