The leaning Whipping Boab at Bedford Downs
Gouache Monotype on Fabriano Paper
In the heart of Gija land, in my father’s country Bedford Downs- The leaning Whipping Boab tree stands, as a significant site where many of our ancestors faced unimaginable horrors at the hands of the first Kardiya (white fella) settlers. Many lives were lost, but like the Boab tree itself; though leaning & scarred, We, the Gija people are still standing tall.
This artwork reflects our resilience, deeply rooted in the earth beneath this mighty tree. The vibrant colours capture the shifting moods of our landscape, reminding us of nature’s power. The Boab’s twisted trunk and branches symbolize strength, perseverance & Hope.
As I created this monotype print, I felt the whispers of the past guiding my hand, reinforcing our deep connection to all beings. This tree is a living archive of our culture, a witness to our journey spanning over 60,000 years.
While we remember the tragedies of our past, we also carry forward a story of strength and healing. The Boab embodies our endurance and our ability to share wisdom passed down through generations.
We Gija people believe in embracing diversity respecting each one’s uniqueness and working together to create a better world for all. Though we may not forget, our hearts are filled with love. Like the Boab, we are woven into the fabric of this country, united by our heritage and dreams.
I hope this artwork inspires others to honour the wisdom of nature and recognize their inner strength.
