JUWARI – The ‘Devil Devil’ Spirit by Peter Gooloou Thomas

Goache Painted Monotype

JUWARI – The ‘Devil Devil’ Spirit

This artwork captures the powerful essence of Juwari, the spirit of creation that exists within and around all living things.

Juwari, often referred to as the ‘Devil’ Spirit, is a formidable force of creation itself. He embodies the energy that shapes the land, controls the weather, governs the seasons, and sustains life. As both the giver of existence and a reminder of the deep interconnectedness of all things, Juwari holds a central place in Gija cultural narratives.

Among the Gija people, the story of Juwari is shared through the Joonba—traditional dance and song ceremonies. One of the most renowned Joonba, Gurrir Gurrir, was gifted to Rover Thomas by Juwari himself. This sacred narrative has been passed down through generations, preserved by senior Gija Elder Patrick Mung and cultural leader Jane Yalunga, Rover Thomas’s only daughter.

Their telling speaks of three Juwari spirits from the region, each with its own unique Joonba. These spirits competed, each demonstrating their power and seeking to bring their dances to the Old Man, Rover Thomas. In the end, the Gija Juwari prevailed, marking the birth of a new era—the dawn of the corroboree and the Joonba traditions that continue today.

This artwork honours the strength and resilience of Gija culture, ensuring that the legacy of Juwari remains alive to inspire and unite future generations.
